Well, class, it looks as though we will not get to see each other until next year. This weather system has sure given us some problems this week!
Wishing you warmth, joy, and peace this holiday season. We can't wait to see you on January 3, 2011. If you have a moment, let us know what you are up to, just remember to use only initials!
Love,
Mrs. Forseth and Ms. Angermeier

Why the sigh, Mr. Frost?
There is some controversy about the meaning of this poem. Some believe that Frost chose the grassy road, the one less traveled. Others think that Frost wished he had taken the grassy road, but actually took the other road and that is why he gave a sigh.
Read Frost's poem carefully. Then, respond to this post and tell me what you think Frost really meant. Use examples from the poem to support your opinion.
The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost
(1874-1963)
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood,
and I—I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Composting
Our class created a composting bin. You can put nuts, anything that grows on trees or plants,or things that grow on roots like carrots. Here is one of our classmates throwing away a piece of fruit.

The Worst AND Best Thing about School
Can you believe that it is almost time to start a new school year? Come on now, school isn't that bad! I bet you can even think of something to look forward to in the upcoming school year! Let's play a little posting game. See if you can name THE WORST and THE BEST thing about having to go back to school. The trick is.... your BEST thing cannot be the same as anyone else's BEST, and your WORST can't be the same as anyone else's WORST. Your BEST can be the same as someone else's WORST, though, and vice versa. Tell your friends about this and lets try to get 25 BESTS and WORSTS before school starts. Ready, set, GO!

WIN, PLACE, SHOW....WHAT YOU KNOW!
Fourth graders at Centerfield have begun an exciting academic competition this week. It's our version of the Run for the Roses, but instead of chasing horses - we're chasing knowledge!
We're spiraling through the fourth grade curriculum to enrich and extend our knowledge in math, reading, and science. Classes rotate to all fourth grade teachers for activities in different subject areas. At the end of the activities, teachers present students with an exit question. If 80% or more of the class answers the question correctly, the class moves forward one space on our racetrack.
This competition seems to be helping us keep our stamina high as we close in on the end of the year. I'm having a lot of fun with it and I hope you are, too! Add your comment to this post to let me know what you think about WIN, PLACE, SHOW......WHAT YOU KNOW!

Raptors!!!!!!!!!

We had a wonderful visit to our classroom by Raptor Rehab of Kentucky this week! We learned so much about these amazing birds and their many adaptations. Respond to this post by telling me: 1) the bird that had your favorite adaptation 2) the structure 3) the function 4) how that bird's life might be different without that adaptation.
Visit the website for Raptor Rehab of KY to learn more about their amazing work! http://www.raptorrehab.org/new/frameset.htm

Have Fun With Writing!
I thought you'd like to have some fun showing off your writing skills on the Weekly Reader website this week. Go to www.weeklyreader.com and check out all they have to offer. I especially liked the "Weekly Writer" section. The Weekly Writer is an activity where a published author and kids work together to create a collaborative story. Check out some of the past stories, they turned out really neat! Have fun and make sure you tell me about what you found.

Do Adults Write?
Quick! - ask an adult at home about his or her writing! Respond to this post telling me 1. One thing your adult has to write, 2. Who is your adult's audience and 3. What is your adult's purpose.
Here is my example:
My adult is Mr. F.
1. He has to write equipment proposals for work.
2. His audience is a group of adults who are in charge of all of the money at his work.
3. His purpose for writing is to persuade those adults to buy him the equipment he needs.

Let's make it happen!
What is the one thing you want to improve before the end of the year? It must be school related. Everyone needs to post something specific, but you do not have to put your initials on your answer.
